UKRI released their updated Open Access Policy on May 24th 2023. It now includes the requirements for UKRI-funded researchers publishing monographs, book chapters and edited collections.
The policy applies to long form publications which acknowledge UKRI funding from any of the UKRI funding bodies and which are due to be published on or after 1st January 2024.
Policy requirements:
- The final Version of Record or Author’s Accepted Manuscript must be free to view and download via an online publication platform, publisher’s website, or institutional or subject repository within a maximum of 12 months of publication.
- Images, illustrations, tables and other supporting content must be included in the open access version, where possible
- The open access version of the publication must have a Creative Commons licence, with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence preferred. An Open Government Licence is also permitted. (This requirement does not apply to third party materials included in the publication)
Funding for monographs, book chapters and edited collections
UKRI is introducing a dedicated fund to support open access costs for outputs in scope of this new requirement. UKRI-funded reasearchers will be able to submit an application for funding through UoP from Autumn 2023. For more information see implementing our open access policy. UKRI will publish final guidance about applying to the fund in Autumn 2023.
Policy requirements and definitions of in-scope and exempt types of publication are further detailed in the UKRI open access policy.
