UK organisations will be eligible to receive EU funding and lead projects.

An agreement in principle has been reached by the UK Government and the European Commission that will enable UK applicants to be fully engaged with the 2024 Work Programmes of Horizon Europe and the Copernicus programme. This agreement is part of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement that, once signed, will see the association come into force on 1st January 2024.

The Horizon Europe 2024 work programmes are already available* and some calls will be opening throughout the autumn. If the call identifier notes ‘2024’ then it is good to go. For these calls, we can lead consortia and if successful the funding will come from the European Commission.

For anyone already applying to ‘2023’ Horizon Europe calls, before the agreement comes into effect, you can continue your application and successful projects will still be covered by the existing UK Government guarantee that funds the UK-based components.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has created this explainer document, which will continue to be updated with further guidance for applicants and grant holders, and there are webinars scheduled to update the research community (and more to come!):

The University of Portsmouth subscribes to the services of the UK Research Office (UKRO) who are the European office of UKRI. UKRO are an amazing source of news, information and resources and we strongly encourage everyone who is interested in accessing European funding, for their research and innovation activity, to ensure they have their account set up and email preferences set to get the latest updates (use your University email address to register).

Equally, the UK National Contact Points are vital for keeping up to date with the latest news, invitations to information and brokerage events and specific queries about the calls to which you are applying. Sign up to the National Contact mailing lists here

You can read more about these recent developments and what it means for UK researchers on UKRO’s article UK Association to Horizon Europe (sign-in needed).

If you have any queries or would like to meet with one of the Grants Officers to discuss the opportunities available, please get in touch by dropping an email to grants@port.ac.uk.
