New POSTnote open for contributions
POSTnotes are short evidence briefings produced by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST).
POSTnotes review emerging areas of research and are widely read by Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff.
A new POSTnote has opened this week and POST welcomes researchers with relevant expertise to get in touch.
Reducing Plastic waste
Plastic waste can persist in the environment for centuries, with concerns that microplastic pollution may affect the health of wildlife and humans. The UK Government has a stated objective to work towards all plastic packaging placed on the market being recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. The devolved administrations also have plans and objectives for plastic waste to move towards a more circular economy. The UK’s overall recycling rate for plastic packaging from household and commercial sources is 52%, while the amount of packaging placed on the market has dropped and recycling rates have remained flat. In 2022, the UK Plastic Packaging Tax was implemented, imposing a levy on plastic packaging components with less than 30% recycled plastic, which are manufactured or imported into the UK.
Researchers who wish to contribute evidence to expertise to the Reducing Plastic Waste POSTnote should email Konstantinos Panagiotidis before 6 May 2024.
