Over the past decade there has been a demonstrable rise in the promotion and uptake of open research across an array of different academic disciplines. Open research describes a range of practices relating to the conduct of research (e.g. pre-registration) and communication of its outputs (e.g., open access publishing). Whilst the importance of open research is increasingly emphasised by external bodies such as funders and journals, it can be daunting to begin to apply open research within your own work, particularly given the variation in application across different research disciplines.

On Friday the 28th June, the University of Portsmouth’s Open Research Network (UoPen) will be introduced through a series of talks that will collectively: 1) raise awareness of open research among colleagues; 2) encourage staff to start thinking about how they can implement open research practices in their own work; 3) share examples of effective practice in open research; and 4) highlight opportunities for staff to begin to contribute to the UoPen network.

All staff who have an interest in, or want to know more about open research are invited to attend. We would particularly encourage attendance from staff who are interested in finding out more about how they could contribute to the development of open research within their own academic discipline.

The workshop will consist of:

11:00-11:30: Arrival and registration
11:30 – 11:40: Introduction to UoPen and the importance of open research (Dr Matt Miller-Dicks and Professor Joy Watts, University of Portsmouth)

11:40-12:30: Reflections on a manifesto for reproducible science (Professor Marcus Munafὸ, University of Bristol)

12:30-12:45: Q&A
12:45-13:30: Lunch

Open Research Support

13:30-14:15: Open Research: An International Perspective (Professor Colin Tredoux, University of Cape Town)

14:15-15:15: Open Research at the University of Portsmouth (Dr Stef Juncu, Professor Kazuya Koyama, and Dr Beatriz Lopez, University of Portsmouth)
