Share your expertise with the Environment and Climate Change Committee
The Environment and Climate Change Committee is looking for researchers and experts who would be able to join a private round table session on Wednesday 11 December, between 10:00 and 11:30. The purpose of the session is to explore two or three of the topics listed below in more depth, so that members of the committee can gain an understanding of key challenges and opportunities in that area. This scoping exercise will inform the Committee’s future inquiry work. Please treat this as confidential, as the Committee is still at an early stage in its scoping work.
The Committee meet in person in the Palace of Westminster, therefore those who are able to attend in person will be prioritised.
Please note: the topic areas listed below are a long list of options, of which only a few will be selected for the roundtable. As such, the Committee staff will only be able to confirm which topic areas have been selected by close of play Wednesday 4 December.
We are looking for individuals specialising in any of the following, in the UK context:
- Net zero and the planning system, particularly barriers to the delivery of large infrastructure needed for net zero and ‘clean power’ targets.
- Energy system governance, at the local, regional and national level.
- Wave energy technologies, challenges for wider deployment, and its potential contribution to the grid.
- The role of woodlands in net zero and barriers to tree-planting initiatives.
- Waste crime – the scale of the issue, challenges, solutions.
- Nitrogen pollution and the nitrogen cycle, with a focus on the role of agriculture.
- The economics of a renewable energy system, full system costs and implications of the transition.
- Progress on developing a circular economy in the UK, particularly any expertise relating to a) materials needed for net zero, or b) in the textile industry.
- Chemical pollution and regulation in the UK, particularly forever chemicals, POPs, and PCBs.
- The environmental impacts of data processing and AI, and/or the use of AI to support net zero (e.g. in the energy sector).
If you have research expertise in one of these areas, and are available at the date and time specified above, please get in touch with the Committee staff at: hlenviroclimate@parliament.uk
In your email, please provide a brief description of your research, a link to your academic background, links to any relevant papers, and, if available, links to any publicly available video or recording which demonstrates your public speaking.
Why should I engage? Engaging with a select committee can lead to further engagement, such as an invitation to give oral evidence. Your insights may inform the Committee’s scoping of inquiries, conclusions or the recommendations it makes. Find out more about why to engage with Parliament.
