Lords Special Inquiry Home-Based Working Committee: looking for a Special Adviser

The House of Lords has established a new Select Committee on Home-Based Working in the UK, chaired by Baroness Scott of Needham Market, to examine the effects and future development of remote and hybrid working. The Committee plans to start collecting evidence next week and will report by 30 November 2025. The Committee’s call for evidence, which sets out the key questions it is aiming to answer, can be found here.

The Committee is seeking to recruit a Specialist Adviser to provide its inquiry with expert support and advice. They are looking for someone who is an expert in the field, who can help the Committee to interrogate and analyse the evidence it receives and, in particular, the available data on hybrid and remote working in the UK.

The successful candidate would be expected to spend a maximum of one day of work per week during their term, while the House is sitting. They would provide the Committee and its Secretariat with a range of expert assistance, which could include recommending witnesses, providing written and oral briefing, advising on points of detail, helping to formulate questions and commenting on/contributing to the drafting of the Committee’s report. Lords Committee SpAds are remunerated on a daily fee basis (the standard rate is £300/day).

If you are interested in and available for the role, please get in touch with the Committee Secretariat at HLHOMEBASEDWORKING@parliament.uk by no later than Friday 14 March with a short summary (maximum 250 words) of your expertise, availability, and why you think you would be suitable for the role. The Secretariat/Chair will shortlist candidates and, where appropriate, conduct informal interviews. The shortlist will not necessarily be limited to those who respond to this advert, and the final decision on appointment will be made by the Committee.

Even if you are not interested in the role of SpAd to the Committee, the Committee are keen to hear from researchers, so please consider submitting evidence

To apply for the Special Adviser role email: HLHOMEBASEDWORKING@parliament.uk by Friday 14 March

Why should I engage? Being a Special Adviser provides a great opportunity to work closely with a committee, informing its work and approach to an inquiry – such as inquiry focus, selection of oral witnesses, and report development and conclusions.
