You may have noticed that a ‘Student Theses’ tab has appear on the Portsmouth Research Portal last week.

The Library team are now busy migrating the PhD theses written by our students (since 2012) into Pure to make them visible on the Portal.  At the time of writing, they’ve migrated almost 400 theses and are on track to migrating the full collection by early February.

Where you can find electronic copies of theses and dissertations produced by Portsmouth students from mid Feb 2017

  • PhDs theses: They will be displayed to the public on the Portsmouth Research Portal. This includes both PhDs and Prof Docs. Where possible, supervisors will be linked to the PhD theses. The Library are busy migrating these in at the moment.
  • Undergraduate and masters dissertations: They are not being changed just yet, and they can be found on the dissertations at Portsmouth website and will remain password protected so only current students and staff can view them.
  • MPhils and other qualifications at the same level: They will be found on the dissertations at Portsmouth website. (The reason they are not in Pure is because the British Library takes a feed from Pure to display our PhDs on the national Ethos database.  So we must ensure that this feed only includes PhDs and Prof Docs.)

The Library team are responsible for uploading all future theses and dissertations produced by Portsmouth students, so academics do not need to worry about adding this information to Pure.

These are a few related FAQs I’ve been asked over the last week –

Q – I can’t find a particular PhD thesis written by a UoP student on the Research Portal.

A – The Library is currently migrating the PhD theses into Pure. They aim to complete the work by the mid February.  In the meantime, please contact openaccess@port.ac.uk and we will be able to help locate the document you need.  (Also, please be aware that the electronic collection of PhD theses goes back until 2012).

Q – I am an academic. Can I add my own PhD to Pure if I completed it somewhere other than Portsmouth?

A – Yes. Click on the green Add New button in Pure, then click Thesis in the left-hand menu. This will be validated by the Library team against the British Library Ethos database before it is made public on the Research Portal.

Q – I did my PhD at Portsmouth and I’m now a member of academic staff. Will my PhD thesis appear on my Pure profile?

A – Yes – providing you completed it within the last 4 years. If it does not appear by early February then please get in contact with openaccess@port.ac.uk and we will investigate further.  If you did you PhD longer than 4 years ago, you can add it to Pure yourself by clicking the green Add New button in Pure, then click Thesis in the left-hand menu.  This will be validated by the Library team against the British Library Ethos database before they are made public on the Research Portal.

Q – I am an academic. Will the PhD theses for the students at Portsmouth I supervised appear on my Pure profile?

A – Yes – providing they completed it within the last 4 years and your student’s PhD thesis indicated that you were the supervisor.  At times this has not always been clear from the data provided, so if you would like the PhD theses written by the students you supervised linked to your Pure profile, then please contact openaccess@port.ac.uk

Q – I am an academic. Will the PhD theses for the students I supervised elsewhere (e.g. while working at another University) appear on my Pure profile?

A – These can be added, but it is up to each academic to add this information is they wish. To do this, Click on the green Add New button in Pure, then click Thesis in the left-hand menu.  Then make sure you add your student’s name as the author and yourself as the supervisor.  This will be validated by the Library team against the British Library Ethos database before they are made public on the Research Portal.

Q – I am an academic and I’ve examined a PhD. Where does this go in Pure?

A – This goes in the Activities section. If you click on the green Add New button in Pure, then click on Activity in the left-hand menu, then click on Examination.
