An Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a unique number that is assigned to an academic author.  So every author in the world should have a unique ORCID, which stays with them throughout their publishing career and is used to properly acknowledge authorship. ORCIDs help to overcome issues such as distinguishing multiple authors with the same name.

ORCIDs are the international standard for identifying academic authors and are now required by most major publishers and funders.
